Introducing the International Lions

Updated: Sep 14, 2019

This year, we are thrilled to introduce our second HFA franchise, the International Lions.

The new team, which will play in Division 3B, is comprised of friends of the Amaanah organization, who will welcome new refugees entering the soccer program, now that the 1st team is full to capacity.

The team was conceived by Lions coach Mohamed Noureldin, who has been engaged with the program for the last three years. In just a few short months over the course of the summer, he has worked with Alan Lee, Baha Eren and Kerron Gabriel to recruit, organize and register the team in time for the forthcoming HFA season.

"The team represents a major milestone in our plans for growth and sustainability," said Richard Spragg, the Amaanah Lions program manager.

"There's always going to be a time during the building of any team-based structure when you have too many players for one team and not enough for two. It leaves programs like ours turning kids away until we've found enough to fill a whole team, and that's the last thing we want to do.

By establishing this second team, Mo, Alan, Baha and Kerron have solved the problem permanently and everyone's excited, not just about this season, but about what the concept means for the future of the Lions."

Chakir Cherif, a founding member of the Amaanah soccer program will also join the coaching team.

"It's a very diverse team," said Mohamed Noureldin,

"Where the first team is made up exclusively of refugees, the International Lions are a mix of refugees and locals. Many of the team are professionals who are keen to serve as mentors and role models for the young refugees joining the team. We're here to show them the limitless possibilities that hard work and dedication can bring."
